Lillevang Nursing Home in Furesø Municipality has been working for several years with targeted sensory stimuli for the benefit of residents with dementia. Now, the efforts for sensory work are also being recognized beyond the municipality’s borders. The Dementia Alliance has nominated Wavecare Sensory Technology for the “Best Dementia Initiative of the Year” award. In total, five initiatives at Lillevang have been nominated, all of which involve sensory approaches in various ways.

Furesø Municipality is collaborating with Wavecare to develop new sensory technology for nursing home residents with dementia. The technology has already shown positive results in delivery rooms and psychiatry in Denmark and abroad, where it helps create calm and security for patients.

The purpose of this project is to explore whether the technology can also have a positive impact on nursing home residents with dementia. As a key part of the project, staff members will receive extensive training in using sensory stimuli as an integrated part of their professional practice.

A noteworthy aspect of this initiative is the deliberate decision to focus on mobile sensory solutions rather than establishing traditional “sensory rooms.” This allows the technology to be placed directly in residents’ own environments, either in their apartments or in common areas. Additionally, Furesø Municipality has chosen to integrate Wavecare’s sensory lighting and themes into a shared living room. This creates an opportunity to use the technology in collaboration with multiple residents simultaneously. For example, it can be used to calm and create peace or to create a comfortable and safe space among citizens with dementia.
