Sygehus Sønderjylland now has four Sensory Delivery Rooms from Wavecare. The region is leading the way with new standards for the births of the future.

When Sandra Steenholdt gave birth to her first child in March 2022 in Sygehus Sønderjylland’s first Sensory Delivery Room, she described it as a dream birth. Today, four sensory rooms are in use, and the Region of Southern Denmark has made the experience part of the new standard.

“I was terrified of giving birth because people say it’s incredibly painful. But now, I think I would describe it as a dream birth. The sensory room calmed me in a different way. I actually enjoyed it,” Sandra says.

A calmer atmosphere, fewer complications

The Sensory Delivery Rooms are designed with calming lighting, sound, and nature visuals that support the body’s natural processes and create a soothing environment for both the birthing individual and the staff. Research shows that the rooms can reduce the risk of emergency caesarean sections and lessen the need for labour-inducing medication.

Since the first installation in 2021, Sygehus Sønderjylland has entered into a service agreement with Wavecare, ensuring ongoing updates, support, and access to user patterns and statistics.

A new regional standard for delivery rooms of the future

In 2022, the Region of Southern Denmark adopted a design catalogue for future delivery rooms. Wavecare’s solution meets all the requirements – including CE-certified technology, mood-enhancing lighting, customised sound, and the option to play personal music.

“It is well documented that with lighting, sound, and a calm environment, we can create a more homely and relaxing atmosphere. This increases the sense of security and ensures better birth experiences. That’s why we want all sensory rooms to be established based on the same well-thought-out design concept,” said Karsten Uno Petersen (Social Democrats), Chair of the Committee for Construction, Procurement and Green Transition, in an earlier press release.

Growing interest in Sensory Delivery Rooms

Wavecare has delivered Sensory Rooms to hospitals across Denmark and is now expanding internationally – with installations at 33 hospitals in Sweden, China, Taiwan, and Canada.

– “We are proud to contribute to better births both in Denmark and abroad. It’s about creating peace and security during one of life’s most vulnerable moments,” says Eva Wennerwald, CEO and founder of Wavecare.
