Slagelse Municipality receives DKK 1.4 million from the Danish Social and Housing Agency for an innovation project introducing sensory technology from Wavecare
With a grant of DKK 1,419,196 from the Danish Social and Housing Agency, Slagelse Municipality can now introduce sensory technology for residents with dementia at Quistgården Care Center.
The technology, provided by Wavecare, consists of light, sound, and images designed to create calming environments that help reduce anxiety, confusion, and restlessness—symptoms that many people with dementia experience daily. The technology can be used in communal living areas or as a portable solution in a resident’s private room.
At Quistgården Care Center, the goal is for the sensory technology to also assist in stimulating memories and bringing out residents’ life stories in their everyday lives, explains Heidi Hjort Kjeldgaard, Head of Public Health, Dementia, and Welfare Technology at Slagelse Municipality:
“The aim is to create the best possible conditions for recreating memories, fostering meaningful dialogue, and recalling positive moments from the residents’ lives. We hope the sensory technology will help enhance the residents’ quality of life and autonomy.”
Great interest from the Senior Committee in Slagelse
Chair of the Senior Committee in Slagelse Municipality, Pernille Frandsen (V), along with the rest of the committee, is eager to follow the project, which aims to enhance the quality of life for residents with dementia while also strengthening the relationships between residents, their families, and the care staff.
“We are generally curious about how sensory technology can create a safer and more meaningful environment for the elderly by bringing their life stories back to life. We hope the project will help support independence, security, and dignity among the elderly,” she says.
Brief overview of the Sensory Project in Slagelse Municipality
The project began in September and will run until December 2025.
- The innovation project is carried out in collaboration with University College Absalon, which is responsible for training care staff in the use of sensory technology.
- Relatives and healthcare staff will be involved in the process of uncovering residents’ life stories and actively using these stories in daily life.
- If the project proves successful, Slagelse Municipality will explore the possibility of expanding the technology to other care centers in the municipality.
