Cutting the umbilical cord is usually accompanied by the cry of a newborn and tears of joy from new parents. On October 11, 2023, an umbilical cord was cut to ecstatic cheers from the staff at Stratford General Hospital. They celebrated the inauguration of their new Wavecare Sensory Delivery Room.

Installed at several hospitals in Denmark and China, this is the first delivery room of its kind in Canada and is designed to offer expectant mothers and their newborns a truly unique and peaceful birthing experience.

The sensory delivery room at Stratford General Hospital has all the necessary equipment and features of a traditional delivery room, but it goes a step further by including technology to create an environment that is anything but clinical. The delivery room is equipped with a digital screen displaying calming nature scenes, dynamic lighting in soothing colors, and specially designed sound programs, such as gentle wave sounds. All these elements work together harmoniously to foster a relaxed and comfortable environment for both mothers and their newborns.

First-time mom Leah gave birth to her son in the sensory delivery room in September. Read her story:
