Wavecare has entered into another collaboration agreement with the Region of Southern Denmark and the Hospital of Southern Jutland in Aabenraa to establish sensory delivery rooms.
Investment in six new sensory delivery rooms
As part of the Region of Southern Denmark’s ambitious Maternity Plan, DKK 2.506 million has been allocated to the establishment of six sensory delivery rooms, designed to create a comfortable atmosphere for expectant parents and their families at the Hospital of Southern Jutland, Aabenraa.
A design guide based on user experience
Syddansk Sundhedsinnovation (Southern Denmark Health Innovation) was commissioned to develop a design guide for the region’s sensory delivery rooms, based on experience from existing solutions and input from staff, expectant mothers, and partners.
Room layout supports the birthing process
By mapping out the process, it was possible to gain an overview of the room’s functional requirements. One key aspect in supporting a smooth childbirth experience was to design the room in zones that naturally guided usage through their layout. Light, sound, and other sensory elements were integrated to create the appropriate atmosphere for different stages of labor.
A homely and familiar setting plays a key role
The design guide from Syddansk Sundhedsinnovation emphasizes the design and aesthetics of the sensory delivery rooms. The interior should facilitate sensory stimulation, and the expectant mother and her partner should have the ability to adjust the environment themselves, creating a personal and comforting atmosphere. The design highlights a homely and familiar setting, incorporating natural materials and references to nature.
Wavecare solutions align with the official recommendations
Wavecare has gladly adhered to the recommendations outlined in the design guide from Syddansk Sundhedsinnovation, with a particular focus on supporting the childbirth process through targeted sensory stimuli and a user-friendly interface, ensuring that both staff and partners can easily operate the system. Additionally, emphasis has been placed on creating a warm and homely atmosphere through the use of sustainable materials and mood-enhancing elements. The initiative also aims to promote a comfortable and relaxing indoor climate while ensuring easy maintenance and hygiene.
Soundscapes contribute to relaxation
In the delivery rooms, creating a calming atmosphere is a priority, with mood-enhancing lighting playing a crucial role. The lighting can be adjusted by both staff and the expectant mother with her partner, allowing for customization to suit different moods and needs. It is essential that the lighting provides a sense of security and can be set to various intensities and tones. At the same time, staff must always have the ability to override the lighting controls in case of emergency obstetric situations.
Natural themes are reinforced through nature-inspired wall decorations and targeted Wavecare moods displayed on wall-mounted screens.
To further enhance the calming environment, the integration of soothing sounds and nature-inspired atmospheres—such as natural sounds or music—is a key focus. The primary emphasis is on familiar natural sounds, such as running water or birdsong, which contribute to the desired ambiance. Additionally, relaxing, mood-enhancing music tailored to the setting can be played. It is important that the sounds and music are in harmony with the visual stimuli in the room. The expectant mother and her partner also have the option to control, mute, or play their own audio via a Bluetooth speaker system. The overarching vision is to create an environment that promotes a sense of safety and tranquility during childbirth.
A positive impact for patients and healthcare professionals
This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on both patients and staff at the Hospital of Southern Jutland, based on previous experiences with sensory delivery rooms. The project will commence in January 2024.
