Sensory Delivery Room

Do you have any question?

Sensory delivery rooms reduce stress and enhance the birth experience.

In 2020, Slagelse Hospital became the first hospital in Denmark to implement Wavecare’s sensory solution in all delivery rooms.

The aim of establishing sensory delivery rooms at Slagelse Hospital is to provide women in labour with a calmer and more positive experience, while also strengthening the clinical work environment.

The Wavecare solution combines atmospheric lighting, soothing sounds and audiovisual effects to create a safe and homely atmosphere around the birthing woman.

Studies show that a sensory birth environment can lower stress levels, reduce the need for emergency caesarean sections, and lead to better outcomes for both mother and child.

“It’s about making the woman feel safe in her surroundings and during birth. That sense of security helps them produce more effective contractions. Contractions are crucial for labour to progress as it should,” says Maj-Britt Schulze Romme, Head Midwife at Slagelse Hospital.

Peter Egede Jensen, Consultant and Clinical Lead at the Maternity Ward, Slagelse Hospital, agrees:

“It will make a real difference for the women giving birth at our hospital. Experience from existing sensory delivery rooms shows that births carried out in these rooms less often require intervention with suction cups or caesarean sections.”

Technology puts the patient at the centre.

At Slagelse Hospital, the sensory delivery rooms are an example of how modern technology and sensory integration can make a tangible difference in healthcare – and place the individual patient even more at the centre.

“Our focus is to improve patient pathways and care through patient-centred innovation. We embrace the opportunities that new technology and knowledge provide. That’s why it was a natural step for us to offer sensory delivery rooms across our entire maternity ward in our newly built hospital,”says Niels Georg Reichstein Larsen, CEO of Slagelse Hospital.

Wavecare allows midwives to tailor the atmosphere in the room via a simple user interface – based on the woman’s needs and the clinical situation at hand. This flexibility helps create a more attentive birth experience and a better working environment for staff – especially during night shifts.

5 Sensory Delivery Rooms

Slagelse Hospital has five delivery rooms, all equipped as sensory delivery rooms and featuring a large birthing tub. Each room also has its own private bathroom and toilet.

A safe and calming environment

The sensory delivery rooms provide a setting for calm and safe births. The rooms feature sound, lighting and moving images that can support relaxation and focus during and between contractions.

Create your own experience

Women in labour can choose calming videos, adjust the room’s lighting to their preference, and listen to meditative sounds such as crackling fire or gentle ocean waves.

1,800 newborns a year.

The maternity ward at Slagelse Hospital welcomes around 1,800 babies each year. All births now have the option of taking place in a Wavecare sensory delivery room.

Danish study of sensory delivery rooms shows positive results.

The first Wavecare sensory delivery room was introduced as a pilot project at Nordsjællands Hospital in 2012. A study conducted from 2014 to 2015 compared births in standard delivery rooms with those in sensory delivery rooms. Here are some of the study’s findings:
