Six new Sensory Delivery Rooms to benefit expecting mothers and midwives' work environment

The Sensory Delivery Rooms at Randers Regional Hospital have been upgraded to sensory delivery rooms that, through sound, light, and a large screen, aim to make the rooms less clinical and more homely.

In 2021, the Regional Council of Central Jutland allocated funds to all hospitals in the region to make their delivery rooms more family-friendly and homelike. The maternity department at Regionshospitalet Randers has now opened six interactive sensory delivery rooms from Wavecare.

“We hope that the rooms will not only benefit the expectant mothers but also provide something positive for the staff’s work environment. We’ve certainly heard that sensory delivery rooms are the staff’s favorite places to work at other locations,” says Deputy Chief Midwife Louise Thorup.

Midwife presents the Sensory Delivery Room

Reduction of C-sections

Research from North Zealand Hospital shows that a Wavecare sensory delivery room can help reduce the number of emergency C-sections and the use of labor-stimulating medication.

A local study of Sensory Deliver Room

The maternity department in Randers plans to study the outcomes of births before and after the sensory delivery rooms are implemented. Additionally, they will examine the user experience for both the expectant mothers and their partners, as well as for the staff.

Study shows positive impact on patients

According to the results of a qualitative study performed in 2014 at Denmark’s North Zealand Hospital …

  • 96 per cent of women admitted to the sensory delivery room reported a positive impact on their feelings of security and wellbeing
  • 93 per cent reported a very positive impact on the birth experience
  • 73.5 per cent reported a very positive impact on their experience of pain.
