Centre Hospitalier Le Vinatier has tested Wavecare sensory rooms. The evaluation shows a significant decrease in the use of isolation and forced medication. The staff also report better relationships with the patients.

One of France’s largest psychiatric hospitals, Centre Hospitalier Le Vinatier, purchased Wavecare equipment in May 2021. Wavecare sensory rooms were installed in three departments under the concept of “calming rooms.”

Results of the Surveys are Very Positive

The healthcare team conducted surveys in 2022 to assess the experiences of patients and staff with these rooms from November 2021 to January 2022. The evaluation showed that Wavecare sensory rooms provide high-quality sensory stimuli, which is especially effective for patients needing calm and balance.

Centre Hospitalier Le Vinatier has expanded with more sensory rooms, and today there are nine rooms.

Shorter Time in Isolation

Patients spent an average of 5.3 days in isolation before Wavecare sensory rooms were installed, compared to 5.1 days before.

Shorter Time with Restraint

Psychiatric patients spent an average of 1.8 days in restraint before the Wavecare sensory rooms, compared to 0.8 days afterward.

Less Use of Forced Medication

93 percent of the nursing staff reported that the sensory rooms helped prevent the use of forced medication.

High User Satisfaction Among Patients

69 percent of users felt that it helped them relax, while 68 percent found it pleasant to stay in the rooms.

High Ease of Use

59 percent of the caregivers (mainly nurses) found Wavecare easy to use.

Much Better Relationship with Patients

94 percent of the nursing staff believed it improved the relationship between patient and caregiver, and more than half (55%) of the caregivers felt that the Wavecare sensory rooms benefited the patient.

High Satisfaction Among Staff

71 percent of caregivers believed that Wavecare sensory rooms were a clear advantage. 85% of the staff had no problems cleaning the room.

In order to limit the use of isolation and restraint, the WaveCare system has been implemented within the intra-hospital unit of the La Chartreuse Hospital Center. It is a calming room installed at the heart of the unit.
