Integrated sensory solution strengthens quality of life and safety in dementia and palliative care.

Wavecare sensory technology has shown significant positive effects on wellbeing, creating calm and nurturing relationships at Quistgården Care Home in Slagelse Municipality. Through calming light, sound and nature scenes, the solution supports residents, relatives and staff in everyday care – particularly in dementia care and palliative care.

Since mid-2024, Wavecare has implemented a sensory technology innovation project at Quistgården in collaboration with Slagelse Municipality and the University College Absalon. The project is supported by the Danish Social and Housing Authority with DKK 1.4 million in funding.

The need for a calmer and more present everyday care

A large proportion of residents in nursing homes live with dementia or complex care needs. This can lead to agitation, aimless wandering, anxiety and challenging care situations – both for residents and staff.

At Quistgården, the goal was to identify non-pharmacological tools that could create greater calm and security, strengthen the relationship between staff and residents, support de-escalation in everyday situations, and improve quality of life – including in the final stages of life.

Together with management and care staff, Wavecare and project partners developed and implemented a project centred on residents’ life stories. The sensory technology is actively used to evoke memories, support dialogue and create meaningful everyday moments.

Sensory technology solution at Quistgården

The solution at Quistgården consists of one stationary and two mobile sensory rooms, enabling sensory stimuli to be adapted to each situation and resident.

The solution combines:

  • Calming nature scenes

  • Music and natural soundscapes

  • Dynamic lighting that creates a safe and comfortable atmosphere

The mobile solutions make it possible to bring sensory technology directly into residents’ private rooms – including residents who cannot access common areas themselves.

Documented experiences from practice

After the first six months, experiences clearly point to positive effects. Residents who were previously restless or agitated now experience greater calm in their own rooms. Terminal residents experience increased safety and reduced anxiety in the final stage of life. The sensory technology also contributes to a calmer and more supportive atmosphere when residents spend time with relatives.

Wavecare is increasingly used as a shared focal point for presence, conversations and memory stimulation. The solution helps evoke memories and life stories, thereby strengthening residents’ sense of identity and adding a new dimension to the relationship between staff and residents.

Staff experiences

Care staff at Quistgården report that the sensory technology contributes to greater calm in everyday care – for both residents and staff. The solution improves the working environment, makes it easier to de-escalate difficult situations, and creates an inviting atmosphere where the lighting feels like “a room within the room” that encourages presence and interaction.

The technology is perceived as user-friendly and easy to integrate into daily routines. Increased calm among residents also frees up time and energy for other care tasks and strengthens relationships through shared sensory experiences.

Competence development as part of the solution

As a key part of the project, University College Absalon has provided training and competence development for staff. This ensures that the sensory technology is used professionally, purposefully and with respect for the individual resident’s needs – whether the goal is to create calm, support cooperation during care situations or establish safe environments for shared activities.

Collaboration with the person at the centre

The project at Quistgården demonstrates how sensory technology combined with professional expertise, education and close collaboration can strengthen quality of life, dignity and job satisfaction in the care sector.

Wavecare and Slagelse Municipality continue their collaboration with the aim of expanding these experiences for the benefit of residents, relatives and care staff.

In line with the Danish Local Government Association’s examples of good practice

Experiences from Quistgården Care Home are also highlighted in two examples in the Danish Local Government Association’s (KL) Technology Guide, demonstrating how sensory technology can create value in elderly care.

KL: Sensory stimuli strengthen the physical working environment

In KL’s overview of solutions that improve the physical working environment, Slagelse Municipality’s use of sensory technology at a dementia care home is highlighted. Both mobile and stationary solutions using light and sound are used to create calm during care situations – particularly during personal care and transfers involving agitated residents.

Experiences indicate:

  • Reduced physical strain for staff

  • Fewer aggressive incidents

  • In some situations, care tasks can be carried out by one staff member instead of two

KL: Sensory technology created calm among nursing home residents

Slagelse Municipality’s use of sensory technology is also highlighted by KL as an example of how light and sound can create calm, improve sleep and enhance wellbeing among nursing home residents.

Highlighted outcomes include:

  • Immediate calming effects for residents

  • Improved cooperation during care

  • A perceived increase in quality and presence – benefiting residents, staff and the municipality

Expansion to palliative care

Based on the positive experiences at Quistgården, Slagelse Municipality has decided to extend the use of Wavecare sensory technology to palliative care. The mobile sensory solutions are used to create calm, safety and presence for residents in the final stage of life – directly in the resident’s room and adapted to the individual situation.

The sensory technology contributes to a more dignified and compassionate framework for palliative care, while allowing relatives to spend time together in calm and supportive surroundings. For staff, the solution functions as a supportive non-pharmacological tool in situations where presence, calm and respect are especially important.

The expansion into palliative care highlights how sensory technology can be used flexibly across different care contexts and needs – always with the person at the centre.
