Sensory Delivery Room
We will contact you soon.
The Wavecare Sensory Delivery Room at Mälarsjukhuset in Sweden has become so popular that many pregnant women now specifically request this room when they arrive to give birth. The hope is that the maternity ward can expand with more rooms in 2026.
Delivery Room No. 6 at Mälarsjukhuset in Eskilstuna, Sweden, has since May 2024 been transformed into a Wavecare Sensory Delivery Room.
The room is now so popular that it has become a topic of conversation on social media among expectant mothers in Sörmland. Many women request the room when they arrive in labour, and several later share that it was a very positive experience:
“It’s almost like being in a spa,” said Johanna Bjarnevi to Region Sörmland when she gave birth to little Clara in the Sensory Delivery Room as one of the first in May.
Noura, who became a mother to little Zain in September 2024, also experienced that the Sensory Delivery Room helped her during labour:
“It went well and quite quickly. I think the calming sounds and dimmed light helped bring my breathing down. For example, you can use the waves: four seconds in, four seconds out,” the new mother told Vårdfokus.
At the maternity ward at Mälarsjukhuset, the focus is on supporting a safe birth in a calm and secure environment.
“Everything we do is about creating an environment that is peaceful, safe, and harmonious to help the woman and her partner relax. This system contributes to that,” says Anna Uhlin, midwife and project manager, to Vårdfokus.
“It’s almost like being in a spa”.

The Sensory Delivery Room is regarded as a major success among the staff. It creates a safer, calmer and more pleasant birth atmosphere and supports natural labour through increased calmness, control and oxytocin. Couples become less stressed and more focused, and staff experience improved working conditions in a harmonious environment. For this reason, it is recommended that the Sensory Technology should be expanded to more rooms and used more broadly.
The Wavecare Sensory Delivery Room is described as calming, cosy/comfortable, atmospheric, wonderful and safe. Many mention that the atmosphere provides a spa-like feeling and makes it easier to shift focus away from contractions.
The maternity ward at Mälarsjukhuset is the first in Sweden to implement Wavecare Sensory Delivery Rooms. The experiences are so positive that there is a strong wish to establish Sensory Delivery Rooms in all birthing rooms when the ward relocates to new facilities in the summer of 2026.
Located in Eskilstuna, Sweden, Mälarsjukhuset is one of the main hospitals in the Sörmland region. Mälarsjukhuset in handles over 2,100 births annually.
The Wavecare Sensory Delivery Room receives strong recommendations from both birthing women and staff at Mälarsjukhuset. This is shown in an internal evaluation of the sensory room conducted with midwives and birthing women.
The Sensory Delivery Room is experienced as a significantly improved birthing environment that increases safety, calmness, wellbeing and perceived quality.
A full 94.5% would recommend the Sensory Delivery Room.
This comes from an internal evaluation with 73 responses from birthing women, partners and staff in autumn 2025.
More than half of the respondents spent more than six hours in the Sensory Delivery Room. There is also high user satisfaction and a clear demand for more sensory rooms.
