Integrated sensory solution increases well-being at nursing home

The Wavecare sensory solution has a significant impact, reducing agitation and wandering among residents with dementia at Lillevang nursing home in Furesø Municipality.

Wavecare conducted a sensory project in 2023 as part of a public-private innovation project with Furesø Municipality.

Up to 80-90% of residents in nursing homes are affected by dementia. Therefore, the nursing homes focus on finding methods to minimize purposeless wandering, anger, and agitation. The goal in Furesø Municipality was to find a solution that could create more calm for nursing home residents with dementia, as well as provide staff with new tools for caring for the residents.”

Together with the staff at the nursing home Lillevang, Wavecare has developed and implemented a new sensory concept focused on improving the well-being of all residents and staff.

Wavecare Sensory project shows significant impact

The sensory project in Furesø Municipality has delivered positive results, as agreed by both leaders and staff.

“Specifically, it has created calm for certain residents and for the staff group. When the staff is calm, the residents are also calm. I am most surprised by the effect it has had on the staff. I’m sure it has also played a role in reducing sick leave,” says daily manager, Majbritt Tillgreen Jensen.

The staff also reports a significant change since Wavecare was introduced at the nursing home:

“We can get the residents to calm down more quickly. I feel that all the residents have benefited from it. Myself included. It’s a completely different atmosphere, where everyone becomes more calm,” says Anita Udengaard Thejl, social and health care assistant at Lillevang Nursing Home.

Training staff in Sensory Stimulation for elderly and dementia care

To be well-equipped to work with sensory stimulation in relation to the elderly and dementia, the staff at Lillevang has been taught how sensory technology can be integrated into care.

Sensory concept includes light, film, and music for a calming atmosphere

The sensory concept includes light, film, and music, designed to create a calming atmosphere. The solution has been integrated as an essential part of the residents' communal living spaces, with the aim of creating calm throughout the day.

Development of Mobile Sensory Solutions for residents homes

In addition to the sensory solution in the communal living area, Wavecare has developed new mobile sensory solutions that can be brought into the residents' homes. These solutions have been tested in connection with various care and daily routines.

Collaboration with Lillevang Nursing Home leads to concrete improvements

The collaboration with Lillevang Nursing Home has resulted in tangible improvements in the care environment and provided valuable insights into the nursing home setting and its physical framework. Among other things, Wavecare has developed mobile sensory solutions for residents' homes and gained knowledge about their effective use both in communal areas and for personal activities.

Experiences shared with other nursing homes in Furesø municipality

Lars Carstensen (C), chairman of the Committee for Elderly and Health in Furesø Municipality, believes that it is a great step toward finding solutions that help residents with dementia:

“In the project, we have seen experiences with residents who are less agitated, wander less, and are less outwardly reactive. It has created more calm. It improves well-being for both residents and staff. If the positive effects continue, it would be exciting to use the solution in other nursing homes in the municipality,” says Lars Carstensen.

At Lillevang Nursing Home, other departments are testing the mobile units. The collaboration with Wavecare will continue in the coming years, where Furesø Municipality will gather further experiences with the sensory solutions.

The sensory project has also been nominated for ‘Best Dementia Initiative of the Year 2023’ in Furesø Municipality by the Dementia Alliance.
