Hospital of Southern Jutland

Region of Southern Denmark will offer all women a dream birth

Sandra Steenholdt had a dream birth in a sensory birthing room at Hospital of Southern Jutland, she shares in a TV feature. Now, the concept is set to be expanded across the entire region.

The Wavecare sensory birthing room helps create a lovely, calm atmosphere where both the lighting and music make the room feel comfortable.

Sandra Steenholdt’s birth in March 2022 took place in the region’s first sensory birthing room at South Jutland Hospital. She believes this was a key factor in making it a true dream birth.

“I was terrified of giving birth because people say it hurts a lot. But I think I would now describe it as a dream birth.”

“The sensory birthing room helped to calm me in a different way. I actually enjoyed it.”

Research shows that sensory birthing rooms provide greater security, reduce the risk of emergency cesarean sections, and decrease the use of labor-inducing medication.

Sensory Delivery Rooms across the Region of Southern Denmark

38 Sensory Delivery Rooms are set to be expanded across the entire Region of Southern Denmark.

“It is documented that with lighting, sound, and a calm interior, we can create a more homely and relaxing atmosphere than what exists in traditional birthing rooms. This increases security for the mother, the partner, and staff, ensuring better birth experiences. Therefore, we want all sensory birthing rooms to be created based on the same thoughtful design concept, so everyone is offered the same great conditions,” says Karsten Uno Petersen (S), Chairman of the Committee for Construction, Procurement, and Green Transition in the Region of Southern Denmark.

38 Sensory new Sensory Delivery Rooms

In December 2022, the Regional Council of Southern Denmark decided that all 38 delivery rooms will be transformed into sensory delivery rooms over the next two years. The expectation is that the new, renovated sensory birthing rooms will be ready for expectant mothers and their partners by April 2024.

5 Hospitals in the Region of Southern Denmark

The maternity wards in the region include Sygehus Sønderjylland, Kolding Sygehus, Sydvestjysk Sygehus i Esbjerg, the new OUH (Odense Universitets Hospital), and OUH in Svendborg.

A Range of Hospitals

Wavecare sensory delivery rooms are installed in several other hospitals in Denmark, for example Hillerød Hospital, Hvidovre Hospital, Rigshospitalet, Slagelse Hospital, and Nykøbing Falster Hospital.

Wavecare abroad

In Sweden, the first sensory birth room opened in 2024. The concept has also spread to China, where sensory birth rooms have been established in Chinese hospitals and Canada.

Results from studies on Sensory Delivery Rooms

The first sensory delivery room was established at North Zealand Hospital in 2012. A study from North Zealand Hospital (2014-2015) compared births in sensory delivery rooms with those in standard delivery rooms. An important result of the study is that:
