Kick-off Meeting for “Sensory Technology and Life Stories in Dementia Care” at Quistgården Care Home in Korsør 🩵

With funding from the National Board of Social Services, Slagelse Municipality has been able to introduce sensory technology to residents with dementia at Quistgården Care Home. In this context, we held a kick-off meeting together with University College Absalon at Quistgården, where we had a valuable dialogue with the staff about how the stationary and mobile sensory rooms function in practice and are experienced in everyday life – from both the staff’s and residents’ perspectives.

Gaining this insight is invaluable to us and also allows us to contribute ideas on how Wavecare’s sensory technology can best be used to match each resident’s stimulation level in combination with tactile touch, enabling a more targeted approach. After six months into the project, we’re happy to see how sensory stimulation for elderly residents with dementia is making a real difference. Small sensory breaks can lead to big changes. When the environment is adapted, it can mean the world for residents, relatives, and staff alike.

At Quistgården, we’ve seen how calming sound and light experiences create a sense of security for both residents and their loved ones during the final phase of life. The fixed installation has been placed in the common room of the Red Unit, while two mobile systems are used in turns throughout the rooms and apartments. One insight we’ve gained is that a resident who previously had difficulty settling in their own room and used to wander now feels more at ease in their space. Thanks to the mobile sensory unit, the staff now have a practical tool that, among other things, has eased the challenges associated with personal care tasks.

In addition, Wavecare’s mobile unit has provided comfort, support, and a gentle alternative for both residents and relatives during the final stages of palliative care. As one staff member noted: “Terminal residents – five or six of them – went from being anxious and restless to calm and at peace. It brought a sense of quiet, also for their relatives.”

We are now working towards using sensory experiences to build community, strengthen conversations, and activate life stories. Sensory stimulation can also spark memories and bring joy. Special Wavecare themes, designed to evoke positive recollections, have proven especially popular among residents – for example, our theme ‘Horses in the Meadow’ is a favourite. ✨
